Here's my essential question:

Does early sexual behavior in teenagers contribute to AIDS and STD's rates?

Here are my 10 questions revised too:

What is a teenager and what age does it start?

What is the origin of HIV/AIDS and when did it reach the United States?

Why do teenagers feel the need to have sex or have so many partners?

Why are teenagers getting involved in sexual behavior at a young age?

What are parents and schools doing to promote abstinence or safe sex?

If teenagers know that having multiple partners can expose you to many STD’s that may even
lead to AIDS, why are they have unprotected sex?

What does the community need to do to encourage teenagers to do other things besides engaging in sexual behavior?

Why do some teens feel they can’t be confident in their decision making?

How has the number of people infected with STD’s and AIDS changed from the 80’s in teenagers to now?

Does teenagers environment at home affect their decision making?

May 19, 2008

I talked to Ms. King today and my focus was HIV and AIDS in the teenage African American community but now my focus is more towards teenagers in general. I'm going to tweak my questions a little to to make sure those are the quesitons I really want to focus on.

Why is HIV/AIDS so high in the African American community?

May 7, 2008

All i did yesterday was search different articles for vocabulary words that I think people would want to or need to know about HIV/AIDS

May 7, 2008

Here are my 10 vocabulary words:

1. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) - this destroys a type of defense cell in the body called a CD4 helper lymphocyte. People with the virus begin to get serious infections that they normally wouldn’t. This means the person becomes immune deficient.
This leads to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)
2. CD4 – one of two proteins on the surface on a human cell that allows HIV to attach, enter, and infect the cell. CD4 molecules are present on CD4 cells (helper t-lymphocytes), which play an important role in fighting infections (foreign bodies).
3. M.S.M – men sleeping with men
4. Lymphoma - a type of cancer involving cells of the immune system called lymphocytes. Lymphoma represents a lot of different cancers of lymphocytes. There are 35 subtypes.
5. Kaposi’s sarcoma – this is when people with AIDS get forms of lymphoma and a rare tumor of blood vessels in the skin. It’s commonly only found in men and seen now in people infected with HIV.
6. PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) – this is what girls may experience if they have AIDS. They get severe yeast infections that don’t respond to normal treatment.
7. PLWH – people living with HIV
8. PLWA – people living with AIDS
9. Asymptomatic – a person showing no outward sign of infection; not feeling sick.
10. ELISA test – a commonly used test used to detect the presence or absence of HIV antibodies in the blood; a positive ELISA test result is indicative of HIV infection and must be confirmed by another different test

I'm going to write my paper on HIV/AIDS in the African community and how it is affecting people with it. Also, if they have someone in their family who has it or knows a friend who has it, how is it affecting them as their friend or family member.

I think the part i will become an expert in how it is affecting an African American man or woman who has HIV/AIDS.
